@termite_colony @dhanyavisnu @Ugra___ The objection is to the replacement of rice with these grains for general use. Twice performance of pariśecana with annam (except on vratādi-dinas) is considered a sacrosanct for vipras - it is said to be "agnihotra-samo vidhiḥ"

@Aadii009 Yes the issue afaik is with the replacement of the main grain with yava and godhūma (the main grain being a variety of rice depending on the time of the year, that is offered after the new harvest in rituals like āgrahāyaṇī and āśvayujī pākayajñas)

Both are ग्राम्य औषधिs to be used in यज्ञs. The rule might be regarding their consumption, nothing to do with them being indigenous or foreign to Mahabharat people. यज्ञ was fully developed in mbh And this is from Markandeya narrating Kali Yuga to Yudhishthir in Van Parva.
Barley was not native to the land of the Mbh people. Consuming barley was apparently a foreign practice to them, newly introduced and not yet fully appropriated/trusted.
