Wainwright at Darwen (Jubilee) Tower, near his hometown of Blackburn. Photo courtesy of Richard Else, the producer of the original BBC Wainwright TV series. This photo was taken in 1990, just a few months before his passing.

A stretch of the Pennine Way near Hawes, where cotton grass flanks the path — a familiar companion along the trail.

Yesterday, I was delighted to pick up the iconic 50-year-old Penyghent drawing by Wainwright, which has been given a lovely makeover by Youdells in Kendal. It is officially one of my favourite drawings.

The Langdale photoshoot from 35 years ago, and the same scene today. Alfred Wainwright, Andrew Nichol and Ken Shepherd. Three friends simply enjoying each other's company in one of the most beautiful parts of the Lake District.

Just south of Grange in the North Western Fells is an area, containing no high mountain, no lake, no famous tarn, but in the author's (Wainwright) humble submission, it encloses the loveliest square mile in Lakeland - the Jaws of Borrowdale.

My most recent acquisition from journalist Roger Ratcliffe, who knew Wainwright. This fabulous photo of a relaxed AW in 1984 was taken by the late Peter Dunne, who framed it for Roger. This & other unseen photos of AW will be displayed at the AW exhibition very soon @ArmittMuseum

Beyond the Lake District, few Wainwright landmarks are as iconic as Penyghent. This 50-year-old drawing, gifted by Wainwright to journalist Roger Ratcliffe, will be displayed for the first time at the Wainwright exhibition @ArmittMuseum in the coming weeks.

Revealed for the first time—an original copper plate of Fleetwith Pike (mirrored image), made in 1965 for Wainwright’s Fellwanderer. It is still mounted on its ink-stained block. Visit the Wainwright Exhibition at the @ArmittMuseum until December 2025
