Hot #offthepress: The #BRICS before and after the Summit in #Russia An alternative, global intergovernmental body, such as BRICS, inherently gives countries of the Global South the opportunity to coordinate on global issues and brings them to the table of decision-makers.

So far, it doesn't appear that US is running Venezuela: “There are reports of groups of armed militias, known as colectivos, setting up roadblocks and searching vehicles for evidence of U.S. citizenship or support for the United States.”

Venezuela: The security situation in Venezuela remains fluid. As international flights have resumed, U.S. citizens in Venezuela should leave the country immediately. Before departure, U.S. citizens should take precautions and be aware of their surroundings. There are reports of

Yes. Incidentally, Venezuela joined Mercosur in 2012. Its membership has been suspended since 2016 over failures to uphold democratic and institutional principles. With political dynamics now shifting, could that suspension eventually be lifted?

Europe and most of South America, both now confronting explicit U.S. military and trade coercion, do the sensible thing: deepen cooperation to increase their strategic autonomy and to establish one of the largest free-trade zones in the world, connecting 725 million people.

Interesting times lie ahead. I wouldn't be surprised if the #EU soon becomes desperate to normalise relations with #Russia. As a counterweight to increasingly ruthless „closest ally“ from overseas. #Trump #Greenland

Unfortunately true: „Europe has the opportunity to carve out an independent role for itself by reaching out to Russia constructively but seems bent on digging its own hole.“

Europe seems determined to continue the conflict and obstruct a realistic peace settlement. The assumption remains that Russia can be repulsed lby Ukraine with European support. The terms set out in Europe’s peace plan assume that Russia’s fundamental demands on NATO

If 🇺🇸 treats Latin America with threats and disrespect, it shouldn’t be surprised when new anti-US leaders emerge. History shows that humiliation and coercion fuel nationalist backlash and regional assertiveness - conditions that once elevated figures like Castro and Chávez.

While the loss of a Latin American ally is a blow, Russia may hope the US intervention in Venezuela means Moscow can do as it wishes in what it considers its sphere of influence, primarily Ukraine. In practice, though, there’s no guarantee for that.

Quite possible: Maduro was likely too intransigent, while the opposition lacked support from military & security forces (as Trump hinted yesterday). With no appetite for a bloody regime change, Trump opted for Rodríguez.
