As for my thoughts on if this is a trend with the SEC being down on RB: I think we’ll be back on course in 2027 when superstars like Caden Durham, Nate Frazier, and Jaden Baugh as well as breakout candidates like Braylen Russell start to make their way to the NFL.

Ahmad Hardy was also left off because, despite rushing for over 1300 yards, his breakaway run rate of under 7% left a lot to be desired, especially playing against lesser competition in the Sun Belt.

Obvious omissions here are Jam Miller and Jaydn Ott. Both of these players had extremely underwhelming 2024 seasons and I just don’t see it from them at this time.

Others I could see having big years if the situation falls in their favor are:. Tennessee RB Desean Bishop (10% Breakaway run rate). Kentucky RB Jamarion Wilcox (15.2% BRR). But both of these running backs may find themselves in a committee.

The last player I’d like to mention is South Carolina’s Rahsul Faison. He had a huge year for Utah State in 2024 with over 1500 scrimmage yards including a breakaway run rate of over 10%

Someone with perhaps better odds to make the leap is Le’Veon Moss from Texas A&M. Injury cut his 2024 season to 9 games, but in that time, he amassed 765 yards on the ground and 140 yards receiving with 9% breakaway run rate at 1.56 yprr

A dark horse candidate would be Davon Booth from Mississippi State. Booth quietly rushed for 750+ yards in 2024 with a breakaway run rate of over 10% and over 1 yprr as a receiver

Who among their ranks is most likely to turn the tides?. Baxter is the obvious candidate: the number 1 rated RB prospect in 2023. He missed all of 2024 with an injury, but did have over 800 scrimmage yards in 2023 as a true freshman.

As of right now, the masses lean towards this being more of a trend than an outlier, as the highest drafted SEC RB in the 2026 class is Texas RB CJ Baxter at RB5. But let’s assume the last 2 years were anomalies and the SEC is destined to put itself back in the elite RB convo.

Interesting stat:. The SEC has produced one of the top 3 drafted RBs in 8 out of the last 10 drafts. The two exceptions coming in 2024 (5th RB drafted, Jaylen Wright) and 2025 (9th RB drafted, Trevor Etienne). Has the SEC become a dearth for RB talent?. Possibly, but maybe not 🧵
