Some issues of Generations Journal are indelible in my mind, and the issue I chose to write about for our anniversary edition is one of those. From an all women of color group of writers and editors came a seminal journal, Care Is Fundamental:
generations.asaging.org
Shining a light on the disparities in care, caregiving, and women who make it work.

30 years ago Generations analyzed nursing home issues, more recently demonstrated the value of personal narratives and showed off its grounding in social policy, all of which Bob Applebaum highlights to great effect in his piece in our anniversary issue:

Generations Editorial Advisory Board Chair Ruth Katz, never one to shy away from a controversial opinion, has done it again in a fiery essay on how far or not we’ve progressed in the aging field. A bit of a tough mirror to look into, but well worth it:

We need to be smarter and bolder to formulate a politically and financially viable plan that succeeds in definitively helping older adults.

Professor and social worker Wendy Lustbader is often the first to take the feminist viewpoint. In the anniversary issue of Generations she details an issue on Gender and Age, with women reflecting on their earlier selves. Highly recommend:

Tying the personal to the professional is a wise exercise in the evolution of women’s place in the world.

Who could have known Medicare might become unstable? Turns out Generations authors wrote about that exact prediction in 1996. Marshall B. Kapp has the story and more thoughts in the anniversary issue of Generations:

One issue held several articles urging Medicare reform way back in 1996.

The topic of older couples bears revisiting, which Erlene Rosowsky demonstrates in our anniversary issue. Even more crucial is her Disasters and Older Adults choice, which she uses to discuss our dismal response to the pandemic. Wise piece, right here:

Maybe we’ll learn from this most recent health disaster.
