5/ That means executing tasks like throwing a strike, landing a sharp breaking ball, or dotting a fastball glove side - not just once, but in every context the game throws at you. That’s why variability in training isn’t something to fear. It’s something to embrace.

4/ This variability isn’t unwanted noise, it’s an opportunity for the body to explore, adapt, and build more resilient movement patterns. A pitcher won’t replicate the same pitch twice, but what they need is the ability to consistently produce the desired outcome.

3/ That’s why variability in training is important. • Long toss.• Waterbag/ball work.• Weighted balls + other tools.• Challenging the environment .• Training in different fatigue states. These few examples all help to force the body to solve problems in different ways.

2/ But in the chaos of the game, conditions are never perfect or the same. The mound. The baseball. The weather. The hitter. The situation. Mental/physical fatigue. And that’s only a few examples. Competition is full of unpredictable variables that pitchers have to solve for.

1/ Every pitcher wants to be consistent, but consistency doesn’t come from robotic repetition. Each pitch will have subtle differences. What matters is finding a functional bandwidth where movement and release conditions are similar (functional similarity).

Another big summer of training for Wes (@mendeswes_). Pitch arsenal sharpened. More stable movement patterns. But arguably his biggest leap came in better understanding how to sequence hitters, make adjustments, and own the “why” behind every pitch. Proud of the growth.

ICYMI: Parker Messick made his MLB debut last night! He threw 6.2 innings, allowing just 1 earned run on 7 hits while striking out 6. We couldn’t be prouder to see @messick_parker dedication and persistence pay off on the biggest stage!

6/ The key takeaway is that there’s no one-size-fits-all approach. The right decision depends on your workload history, your goals, and the timeline for when you need to be game ready again. Shutting down simply because “that’s what everyone does” may cost you more than it helps.

5/ Time away from high-intent throwing and competition is important. However, extending that to months without picking up a baseball isn’t necessarily the best answer. In many cases, the smarter approach is to reduce overall stress while still keeping the skill alive.

4/ Of course, there comes a time when both the arm and the mind need a break. But for many athletes, a complete shutdown creates too steep of a ramp up come fall, which often leads to performance setbacks or worse, injuries.

3/ That’s why blanket shutdowns rarely work. Some high school and college pitchers are finishing up a high workload of playing and training, while others barely touched the mound and are fighting for a role heading into the fall. These are completely different scenarios.

2/ The question many ask: should I shut down completely, take a deload, or just keep training? . The answer, as with most things, depends heavily on context. The truth is if you haven’t accumulated much physical stress to begin with, there’s nothing to “recover” from.

1/ It’s that time of year again. HS/College players find themselves in that awkward middle ground between summer and fall. It’s easy to step away and coast for a few weeks. But is that what’s best?.
