We are delighted to announce that Sean Connelly is the 2025 Artist-in-Residence at the A/P/A Institute. Connelly is an artist based in Honolulu, Hawai‘i. They work across disciplines and support Native liberation in Hawai‘i and beyond.

Thank you to all who participated in “The Security of Identity Politics” symposium organized by the A/P/A Graduate Student Working Group. Grad students from across the country presented timely & intriguing research that critiques & expands notions of A/P/A identity.

Alternatively, “Asian/Pacific/American” is an illustrative example of how identity can both gather marginalized peoples and generate forms of solidarity, knowledge, and activism across different geographies and cultures beyond the pursuit of belonging and security.

Concepts such as the model minority, affirmative action, and intersectionality have thus often been instrumentalized in the pursuit of defending and securitizing the existing political order against political challenges from both left and right.

On one hand, representation-based identity politics offer security and comfort by widening membership into positions of power and privilege based on liberal capitalist promises of diversity.

The symposium will interrogate how different forms of Asian/Pacific/American identity politics both serve and challenge notions of security amid the intensification of the border crisis, chauvinist populism, and forever wars.

Highlighting connections between decolonial struggles in Hawai‘i and Palestine, Connelly will be in conversation with Nadine Fattaleh, Fall 2024 Student Artist-in-Residence and Nour Joudah @nsdoud, assistant professor of Asian American Studies at UCLA.

Connelly is the founder of After Oceanic Built Environments Lab and the nonprofit Hawai‘i Nonlinear. Connelly’s work supports grassroots groups who build and care for the physical wellbeing of Hawai‘i built environments in the protective form of 'āina (Land/That Which Feeds).

Connelly writes, "growing up in Honolulu, I’ve developed an alternative art and architecture practice shaped by oceanic connections, intergenerational family histories, and the complex dynamics that emerge where grassroots activism meets global change.".
