To mark the centenary of James Baldwin, I wrote a short essay for @TheLancet. On what he's taught me RE responding to pushbacks. To beware of "strategic ignorance" and "the imaginary line of selective judgement". James Baldwin: ignorance, power, justice

We tested many different scenarios in our report, including service radius of sites, number of sites that remain open, and capacity of sites.

Our results underscore the need for expanded services in sites that remain open if other sites close. This might mean more booths, longer hours, and more staff. This has not been part of the policy discussion yet.

The estimates above assume that sites that remain open can accommodate the increased client volume from sites that close. We estimated that overall capacity at sites that remain open will need to increase by >50% to maintain service for most clients.

Also reasonable to assume that people will move from using in sites to using in public after they lose access to sites. Remember that the government's alternative doesn't allow supervised consumption. Hard to see how people concerned about public drug use are supporting closure.

If 6 sites close and the service radius of sites that remain open is 500m, 47% of current clients (636 people) will lose access each month. What will happen to them? If they use drugs alone or unsupervised, they are at high risk of overdose and death.
