@AMAManual It looks like all the character formatting—superscripts, subscripts, italics—and line spacing have disappeared from the online manual (eg, 19.5). Do you know when formatting will be fixed?.

In that case, we would lowercase. In references we only cap proper nouns.

@AMAManual oh i meant when the guidelines are in the reference list. i’ve seen titles in which everything is in sentence case except for Guideline, ie, ā€ESC Guideline for the management. ā€ so i wondered if i should retain the capital G even in the references list.

AMA style does not forbid a sentence constructed with respectively (in fact correct usage is shown in chapter 11). However, many of our editors avoid it--it makes more work for the reader to match up items in a series.

@AMAManual What do we prefer regarding "respectively"? Avoid it in sentence structures? "Preakness, Eclipse, and Lexington finished first, second, and fourth, respectively, in the Gold Cup." vs "Preakness finished first, Eclipse second, and Lexington fourth in the Gold Cup.".

In JAMA Network journals we tend to avoid this, as you note it's redundant and cluttering.

@AMAManual Is it ever OK to label the bars in a chart with the actual number? It seems redundant to me, and adds to chart clutter.

It's probably sufficient to give the proprietary name of a database. For example, just PubMed is sufficient; it doesn't need to include (National Library of Medicine) as a qualifier.

Hi @AMAManual.should the properietary name of the databases be given in-text like softwares?.i.e., ā€œWeb of Scienceā€˜s SCIE (Clarivate)ā€ or is just ā€œWeb of Scienceā€˜s SCIEā€ suffice?.

Fee-for-service can be used lowercase when talking about payment models in general, and it can be capped or lowercase when talking about the Medicare model in particular.

@AMAManual Would you capitalize "Fee-for-Service" if referring specifically to the Medicare plans? It's capitalized on the CMS website, but lowercase is used in several JAMA articles I looked at.

Sure, you can introduce any abbreviation you like. But is it necessary? Reader friendly? Context appropriate? Most people know what NICU is, so for clarity "NICU admission rate" might be preferred. Weigh carefully space or keystroke economy against comprehension.
