Good morning! Sunny sunrises in january most often means cold temperature. Well, only - 8 celsius now. Last year around same time this meant something between - 20. - 30 celsius. Cold temperatures are one big thing to manage if you're farming in Finland. 1/

Good morning! Tax day is it - I do the bookkeeping myself but the rest of the stuff I like to do together with advisor. It is good to get an outside opinion about how my farm economics are running and maybe learn some more new tricks

So, cows can manage winter without big problems if farmer can manage those few things. 4/4.

I like to have winter pastures for cows. It takes some planning anf effort, biggest risk is icy places which may be slippery under hoof. Last year I lost two cows because they slipped and broke legs. Pros of winter pastures are really good: clean fur, better hoof health 3/.

You just have to have enough dry hay or other dry stuff to get past to most cold times. Wet bales will froze up in coldest times. Dry sleeping areas are no-brainer, trick is to have enough dry stuff (saw dust, peat, straws etc.) 2/.

Short thread about cow husbandry in winter. In summary, suckler cows don't mind the winter, if basics are okay: that means water, food, dry place to sleep. Everything Else is just icing on the cake. I talked about water earlier. Food is simple, 1/

If animal farm stops the production, traffic (trucks, milk trucks, slaughter trucks) gets lesser and also the interest to keep roads open. That's my little thread about winter logistics of farm In Finland 10/10.

Bonus 2. The aging and be coming desolate is problem for winter maintenance in rural areas. When there's less people, the public interest to winter maintenance gets lower too. That is real problem in some parts of Finland. Problem also rise if animal farm stops production. 9/.

Bonus 1. The road maintenance is Hot potato here. Last decades budget for road road maintenance has been too low, so overall condition of roads in countryside is not great. That also affects winter maintenance and some roads can be in really hazardous condition in winter. 8/.
