Hard to believe this is real: My first-ever solo-authored paper got accepted at @AJPS_Editor ⁉️ In this review study, I ask: Does terrorism 𝒓𝒆𝒂𝒍𝒍𝒚 affect citizens' socio-political attitudes? If yes, to what extent/how/when? Ungated: https://t.co/MTubCyqE7D 🧵(1/12)

What drives public support for peace provisions? Based on intergroup attribution theory, we argue that public support for peace provisions depends on “who bears the burden of peace,” with people...

No, citizens are smart: Their support for peace provisions follows a careful assessment of the group-based implications of the provision. In the paper, we suggest three patterns. So leave this thread now, and discover these patterns in our paper! ☺️ https://t.co/nBLmS1eTVE (9/9)

The panel study shows that these effects persist for at least six months but also reveals a more nuanced perspective. Support does not automatically decrease when the ingroup bears the cost or increase when the outgroup bears it. (8/9)

Our initial findings confirm that support for monetary compensation and war crime punishment decreases when the ingroup must pay or stand trial. Conversely, support increases when the same burdens fall on the outgroup. The sizes of these effects are remarkable. (7/9)

And six months later, we replicated the original experiments with the sample respondents and included seven other question-wording experiments with more locally relevant provisions. (6/9)

We also explore how an emphasis on burden-sharing or contributions of the International Community shapes support. (3/9)

Based on intergroup attribution theory, we argue that people want to protect their ingroup while holding the outgroup accountable. Therefore, support for peace provisions diminishes when the ingroup pays and increases when the outgroup shoulders the burden. (2/9)

Peace provisions are designed to punish perpetrators and rebuild nations. This inevitably involves certain costs. However, how disclosing information about the party responsible for these costs affects support for peace provisions remains unclear. (1/9)
