Incredibly shocking news for the community.
Very sad about the passing of Mike Kattan. He was a terrific human being, valued colleague, and a beloved chair. Im still in shock over the sudden loss of my friend. Deep condolences to his family and all those who knew him and were the better for it.

Only proposals deemed fundable provide regulatory and budget documents, which are evaluated by designated peer reviewers. We don't spend any time on peripheral documents until the proposal itself is judged worthy of funding.

PI presents proposal as a 20 min seminar followed by a 10 min Q&A. ALL members of the study section vote without any influence of anyone else's opinions and provide a para of score-driving strengths and weaknesses. PO summarizes and passes on info to PI with averaged scores.

My opinion about the right solution is exactly opposite. Instead of anonymity, my suggestion is to make NIH study sections like a chalk talk. 30 days prior to review, we submit a 1 page specific aims. ALL applications are reviewed at study section.
