It’s a sunny, summer morning in Oklahoma. Researchers with HORUS, the world’s most advanced weather radar, are prepping their radar for deployment as we learn more about when technology like this could be more widely available across the country.

Time will tell if a radar like HORUS could one day replace all the weather service radars, which could happen within the next 10 to 15 years.

NEW: A Severe Thunderstorm Watch has been issued for almost all of Southeast Texas until 10 pm. These storms will be LOUD with thunder, lightning & heavy rain. Primary severe concern will be the chance for large hail, but damaging winds & a tornado are also threats. @abc13houston

Only on 13: Lance Wood, former Science Operations Officer of @NWSHouston, has retired. He took round 2 of early retirement in NOAA given by the Trump Administration last month. This means our local NWS office is without ALL their top managerial roles.

It's not a position to be in just a few weeks shy of hurricane season, however former NOAA workers said there are contingency plan to ensure everyone remains informed in case of disaster.
