LLMs are now everyday conversation partners, but key questions remain: which, if any, inferences do they compute for conversation? Are LLMs (non) human-like *pragmatic* language users? Submit to our workshop and join for talks by @_jennhu @vdemberg @meanwhileina @dan_fried!

about positive change before. Please consider doing this again for a peaceful cause. Ask for an immediate ceasefire mediated by the US & other countries. Help reason & sensible action prevail over the dark forces that have brought us here. For the sake of the children at least.

In line with the data, our model predicts that the reply "interesting" can be interpreted either positively or negatively depending on the first speaker's statement. Thus, the inference of opinions takes into account previous discourse moves.

Listeners can then use the knowledge of this complex speaker behavior to infer the actual opinion state of the speaker.

In a behavioral experiment we show that speakers choose more indirect utterances when opinions of conversation partners do not align. Participants select indirect utterances more often when they are told that the speaker wants to avoid conflict.

We use #RSA-inspired formalism to predict that speakers prefer indirect utterances when they anticipate that their conversation partner has an opposite opinion. We propose a utility function that incorporates the desire to be truthful (informational utility) and avoid conflict.

Imagine a (fully hypothetical) situation: you are terrified of some recent election outcome. When would you say that the election outcome is interesting, rather than calling it horrible? In a new paper with @meanwhileina and Martin Butz we develop a model of #indirect speech.

#Context plays a critical role not only in interpreting language but many other cognitive processes. In a new paper, we propose that context-sensitivity is a core feature of human memory that enables flexible planning, #generalization, and decision making https://t.co/LigJbVD4Dc
