An AARP survey found most older people with #debt carry several kinds of loans—mortgage, credit card, auto loans, and even student loans. "These debt payments limit the financial flexibility of older homeowners," says @AARP's @LoriTrawinski.

“There’s been a concerted effort to divert attention to PBMs (Pharmacy Benefit Managers),” said @leighdrugwonk, prescription drug policy principal for @AARP. But, she said, there are “no angels in a market that’s worth hundreds of billions of dollars.”

"It's a difficult thing," says @LoriTrawinski, senior director of finance and employment for @AARPpolicy. "People are very private about their #finances. We hear a lot of stories about parents not informing their children about debt they have. "

“This is the opportunity to correct any past mistakes & do the planning needed for a secure #retirement,” says @AARPpolicy's @dcjretiresecure. “Even if you’ve done nothing, there’s still time to put yourself on a sounder footing.”

Many states are closing the coverage gap with state-facilitated #retirement savings programs, but millions lack the ability to build financial security via payroll deduction. As of Oct 2024, 11 states had “Work & Save” programs, with 9 more implementing.

Private Medicare Advantage plans were introduced on the premise that they could deliver health care coverage more efficiently than traditional #Medicare, but under current payment rules, Medicare pays private plans more for comparable individuals.

Medical debt isn’t like a mortgage or a car loan. You don’t take it on voluntarily. It’s also not a good predictor of creditworthiness. But #MedicalDebts that go to collection appear on #CreditReports, threatening older adults’ financial security.

Based on @AARP’s survey of family caregivers, we know that more than half have a high school diploma or less and a household income of less than $30,000 per year. #Medicaid allows them to keep caring for their friend or family member.
