Chicago-born Cardinal Robert Prevost has been elected as Pope Leo XIV. He is the first pope to come from the United States and only the second from the Americas after his late predecessor. One can only wonder what the Know Nothing Party of the 1850s would think of this!.

On this day 160 years ago, United States forces led by Lt. Gen. U.S. Grant took the surrender of the rebel army in this home in Appomattox, Virginia. The War of the Rebellion began to end from this point on. The Union had been saved and slavery's abolition secured. #civilwar
