Wrote a small tool for easier analysis of SS7 MAP and Diameter traces with Wireshark:. Features:.- put each SCTP chunk in its own packet.- group together messages from one transaction.- apply Wireshark filters to transactions instead of single messages

And while it is possible for a network operator to protect inbound roamers on SS7, it is currently almost impossible to do so on Diameter (the SS7 successor, used for 4G roaming).

"Track & intercept any phone in the world" is not as easy anymore as it was five years ago. Many network operators take measures to protect their own subscribers. But they can't protect you once you are roaming in another network, and most networks don't protect inbound roamers.

Thanks to everyone who voted. I'm with the majority here, but only since phones have no visible antennas anymore, otherwise you ended up with a hole in your pocket or a damaged antenna or both. :).

I switched my phone to "LTE only" a few weeks ago and haven't looked back. Sub-optimal 4G reception is still preferrable to full 2G/3G reception in most cases. (Yes, 2G/3G fallback is still a thing in Germany, even in urban areas).
