#CHI2023 I’ve encountered a couple of folks who were surprised to hear that there are any talks today, so just a reminder: yes, there’s one session of CHI talks this morning!.

Oh and: I’m only eating outdoors, ideally in smallish groups, because of the ongoing pandemic. I know “outdoors” is a bit of a hard sell with this weather, so if you are as well, let’s hang out! #CHI2023.

Of course I made this for myself, so no guarantees of comprehensiveness. It's prioritizing things that I like to eat, ideally with outdoor seating or takeout. Also there's a layer with vintage/indie shops that you can turn on too. :).

Note that this was based on internet searching a month ago, so "False" in a category like "takeout" or "veg friendly" doesn't necessarily really mean false, just that it wasn't obvious from their website.

One of the papers is about augmenting an otherwise-purely-mechanical knitting machine with lightweight sensing and interpretation to make manual machine-knitting easier and support improvisational use:..(Presenting on Thursday morning at 9:00 in Hall G1.).

A bit late to the promo game but hey #CHI2023 I’ll be presenting two new papers — both about knitting but in two very different ways — and, presumably, doing my best to hang out with folks especially in computational creativity and fabrication.

Here’s a great summary of historical machine lace:

Machine netting (“bobbinet”) is fascinating, though— sort of a cross between warp-knitting, weaving, and machine sewing. And there *is* “bobbinet-jacquard,” but that’s more “by analogy” to a jacquard loom than a direct descendant or modification of it.

FWIW, jacquard looms per se don’t really do lace. The lace shown in the painting looks like cutwork (embroidery+cutouts on a woven or knit mesh ground). Historical machine laces involve either machine-netting as a ground for hand/machine embroidery, or raschel/warp knitting.
