I've been reflecting a lot on my relationship to my country as it relates to my scholarship. I'm grateful to @EdWeekOpinion for allowing me to process this for the public eye. Happy Independence Day!
“Many Americans who proudly fly the American flag just two weeks later demonstrate a willful ignorance of the beauty of Juneteenth,” writes Zachary Cote of @Thinking_Nation. “We cannot continue to let this happen.”

I just finished MLK's Letter from Birmingham Jail, finished while Trump was sworn in. So much to unpack in that timing.

Historical thinking is empowering; but, it's is humbling, too. When we think historically, we are empowered to enter into conversations about complex ideas. But, we also know our limits. We empathize with who we study. We rely on evidence over our own opinion. We're humbled.

I wonder if we spend too much time chasing the moment (Digital literacy, AI literacy, Media literacy, STEM, etc.) when our society might be much better off if we simply aim for what MLK Jr. said: "“Intelligence plus character that is the goal of true education.”

Is the education system too much concerned with "meeting the moment" (I.e. "21st century learners) rather than the more timeless goal of creating good people with the agency to think well?
