I wrote up all the ways that I build community and have students engage in virtual math class that don't require webcams. No special apps needed besides Zoom, Google Slides, and Google Jamboard. @howie_hua @MrsParkShine @IllustrateMath #MTBoS #iteachmath

Workplace social has just asked us to send in baby photos so we can engage in a fun baby-identifying activity. I just sent a long response about how this leads to an activity of skin tone comparison, or singling out the one or few POCs. And some folks don't have childhood 1/2

Was musing earlier this wk abt words in [colloquial?] Eng that mean something slightly different in math class. "Those two *sides are *even." "That sentence has *parallel structure." "Restorative justice *circle." Other e.g.? I want to think beyond calling these Tier[#] vocab.

I have meetings every single day, teach three courses this semester, and am data collecting for my dissertation. I’m tired all the time. However, I will still never fix my lips to say this is a difficult as K-12 teaching!

The reasons they gave were: We don't want you to have a bad experience w/ ea oth outside and not want to come to this grp anymore; We don't want you to have to out yourselves that you're attending this grp/in therapy if you run into a mutual friend.

Went to group therapy for an affinity group thru univ behavioral medicine. We were told not to make friends w/ other group members or meet each other outside of sessions until this series is over. Is this normal practice? Goes against every affinity grp I've ever been a part of.

I do not want to use a translator. I don't need a translator to communicate with the participants on a daily basis, so to use one to conduct my research further situates "academic [language]"/"educatedness" as "superior" to colloquial/"broken" [language].

Looking for a possibility model/method paper for interviewing participants using a language that I am only verbally fluent in, but they are proficient in, & then researcher & participant work to transcribe that interview by negotiating the languages together #qualitative #phdlife

Woke up & checked phone. Another one? Damn. "Dance Club"? That's a weird... Like Club Q or PULSE? Took several sites to find "city with large Asian American population" and "Lunar New Year celebration." No amt of auspiciousness can stop hate. My hurt heart goes to their families.

Had a free moment this afternoon to listen in on the SFFA v. Harvard case while rushing b/t classes. Didn't last 15 minutes before I found my tired, stressed self crying while walking. One ? grouped all Asian Amer as a monolith while the next separated Black applicants by class?!

at an event, senior scholar commented on the @gradworkersofBU block party as a “waste of time.” as someone new, i debated speaking up. luckily, another senior scholar responded “is it?” as my buddy @linquafranqa asks, which side are you on https://t.co/Ib3n8QCns0

Thanks for this! I emailed them & they replied immediately saying the request has been submitted & will take 7-10 business days to process. Hah! Spring course registrn starts in 5 calendar days. What a world we live in that the sports people have ctrl over my academics!!! 😶🙃😶
@xyu119 Oh! This happened to me last fall as well. You gotta call the sports people at the arena and tell them you want to opt out… manually… yup.

There are first-year PhD students in my department who still haven't gotten their first paychecks (we started Sept 1). 😡😡😡That is seven weeks of unpaid labor, not to mention the financial hole they started with by just moving to Boston for this program.
Last week Associate Provost Kleinman responded to our letter—without replying whether or not the university would recognize us, he asked for a definition of who is in our union. After discussions among our organizing committee, we responded:

There's a hold on my account --> can't register for classes, etc, because I didn't cancel the "Sports Pass" that gets auto-added to my bill but isn't covered under the PhD package (not a problem last yr). But now that there's a hold, I can't cancel the Sports Pass!!! 🤣😭🤣😭
