Wheeler High School in #CobbCounty was named after a confederate general during the height of resistance to desegregation in 1965, but a group of Wheeler students are campaigning to change the name.

While researching the history of our school, this excerpt from Wheeler’s first yearbook stood out to us. It’s important to remember that Joseph Wheeler was chosen for one specific position he held: Confederate general.

Grady High School has similar characteristics to ours. While we admire and appreciate their efforts, we hope to eventually celebrate alongside them, having addressed the disparity between what our student body stands for and what our name represents.

Five of our members went on Mr. Hutchins’ live show Coffee Talk with Tre. He is the new board member for Post 5. Zoe Shepard, a Wheeler junior, commented on the board dissolving the name evaluation committee. Huge thanks to Mr. Hutchins! Watch it in full (link in bio).
