IF you encounter a cougar:
- NEVER approach or offer it food. You are NOT a Disney Princess.
- Face the cougar. Talk to it firmly while slowly backing away.
- Try to appear larger. Stand on a rock or a stump or open your jacket to appear wider.
- DO. NOT. RUN.
Cougar encounters are very rare. These images were captured on private trail cams and offer a delightful glimpse at an elusive creature.

That said, there are some things you should keep in mind when recreating in cougar habitat:
-Keep your camp site clean and clear of waste
-Keep small children close to your group and in plain sight
-Do not approach dead animals. They could be cougar prey left for a later meal
"People are going to be so impressed with the trail cam footage that the discourse will be about how to install trail cams of their own so they can view wildlife safely." - A more naive version of me, 4 seconds before posting

Additionally:
-Offer up all coffee and tasty treats
-Offer to paypal/venmo/ca$h the cougar so it will grant you safe passage. We recommend a minimum of $50.
-If you are a Disney Princess, give us weekend tickets to Disney Land or Disney World.

If you go hiking in cougar country, always carry a cardboard box with you. If you encounter a cougar, set the box down and back slowly away. You can make your escape while the cougar tries to sit in the box.
