New study further supports that gut microbes may influence depression. Now, scientists have found gut bacteria that make or consume GABA, a key signaling molecule in the brain. GABA-modulating bacteria of the human gut microbiota https://t.co/usd3l4ZhoR

T. brucei contains only two genes with introns. Makes you wonder whether these introns have a biological function.

For the first time, the Bartel and Fink labs @WhiteheadInst find a biological role for full-length, excised introns — challenging the idea that they’re simply byproducts of gene expression, destined for rapid degradation. The paper appears in @nature: https://t.co/zi8HqYuBqU

It doesnt’t matter how beautiful your theory is, it doesn’t matter how smart you are. If it doesn’t agree with experiment, it’s wrong. In that simple statement is the key to science.

Telomeres, DNA segments at the end of eukaryotic chromosomes, are associated with aging. The rates at which they shorten (pictured below) may be a predictor of species lifespan, a new study suggests. In PNAS: https://t.co/lNvFphlqjU
