It implies that the kiss, much like the lighthouse, wasn't pure and whole and good, but instead a warning and something Ed was a fool not to avoid. The symbolism of kissing at a lighthouse in that specific moment would have clearly laid out 'disaster'.
Ok so. This lighthouse kiss. It was changed to what we saw, which was beautiful. A lot of people are upset that we now know what we could have had, or they're relieved because they would have been more feral than they already are. But I feel like I get why they would change it 🧵
Or at least why it's good they did. It makes sense to think they should kiss at a lighthouse, since it's intimately related to Stede & marriage. It gives comparison and contrast in that it compares a union but contrasts loveless to love. But after further thought, there's issues.
If they kiss at a lighthouse after Ed says "You're supposed to avoid lighthouses" then follow that with what came next (Stede leaving and inadvertently causing heartbreak, it would imply that their relationship should have been avoided.
In changing the scene to a different location, they provide space to heal that wouldn't have existed if they'd left it. I love hearing that it was a thought, though, because that means they might reuse the idea later.
I love the idea of, after the angst has passed, Stede and Ed getting married at a lighthouse house. The Lighthouse at that point in the story would be an ironic note, symbolizing the growth in Stede and the contrast between his two relationships. /end 🧵
