Phantom goals, time holes, Trumpy gaslighting, higher Biblical criticism... @guardianweekend let me go to town in a story about VAR and how it turned football inside out

@tomlamont @guardianweekend Some of us knew #VAR was never going to work, were adamant it should never have been introduced and knew it had absolutely nothing to do with correcting obvious errors

@tomlamont @guardianweekend Isn't the solution to this to go down the same route as cricket and tennis where each team would have limited numbers of reviews (maybe one per half)? The team captain would call for a VAR decision and would only lose the right to review if unsuccessful. Less reviews, more drama?

@tomlamont @guardianweekend Great article. @guardian called it a long read but it didn’t feel like it. A really good read!

@tomlamont @guardianweekend Excellent article but before you dismiss VAR, look at women's football, inc #FAWSL , where referees' mistakes can't be overturned, and ghost penalties sometimes spoil matches.

@tomlamont @guardianweekend You somehow omitted the Sissoko Moment where Liverpool were gifted the Champions League (penalty). VAR is very worthwhile, just not the extent to which it is being used. After all who decides if a football pitch is a perfect rectangle without using perfect measurements?

@tomlamont @guardianweekend Tre are some real issues here. Football is obsessed with officiating. Pundits spent their time moaning about refereeing decisions, now they moan about VAR. With regard to some of the examples you had in your article: The offside decisions highlight tnonsense that is the office r

@tomlamont @guardianweekend It's not VAR it's the ridiculous offside rule. Also teams should have VAR referrals as in cricket which would be more interesting and reduce the number of referrals

@tomlamont @guardianweekend Good article. Though unfortunately the use of VAR is being implemented differently by the FA, PL than the other domestic leagues in Europe. Numerous times IFAB has warned them to use correctly. VAR is another tool for officials like goal line and headset comms. It will get better

@tomlamont @guardianweekend A good, thoughtful article. But I do wonder to what extent managers’ complaints are about a problem with VAR in general, or decisions that went against them. I also recall at least one occasion (Arsenal vs Man U) where VAR corrected a genuinely awful call.

@tomlamont @guardianweekend ANYONE who watches American sports could see this coming a mile off - why were so many people blind to the impact VAR would have on the beauty and fun of our game??? Here in the USA fans are not as naive as they talk about the "calls going our way". The toothpaste is out the tube

@tomlamont @guardianweekend I really question the FA's/referees agenda here, they are moving the game to a position while fans are not there. I really do predict a riot when the stadia are full again if this kind of decision making continues. 2018 World Cup gave perfect VAR model, what happened to that?
