One thing the far left struggles with is getting people to their side. The assumption seems to be that everyone should already be there, and if they aren’t, it’s a problem with the other person rather than the far lefts ability to persuade.
To the contrary, the last election proved that people of color are a lot more sane and strategic about building coalitions to win elections than privileged white liberals, who tend to be farther to the left than they are.
@RadioFreeTom
Admittedly, I’ve become farther left than I ever assumed I could get. But I got there through reading things that changed my perspective. Had someone tried yelling and belittling me to the cause, I doubt it would have worked.

The nation as a whole is further left than many want to think. It only appears center/center-right due to the EC and gerrymandering.

Who are the ‘far left’ to you - the people who advocate for the basic humane social policies Europe /other developed countries have had for DECADES?

My definition of far left, are those who are want to force the country further than it’s willing to go; without doing the hard work of helping the country to get to the place of making the leap.

“Keep your government hands off my Medicare.” People are already persuaded. Progressive policies are always popular when not stigmatized by dishonest labels and bad faith framing. Persuasion, unfortunately, is no match for bad faith misinformation.

@RadioFreeTom
Far left sells policy (rational). Far right sells emotion (social/culture). Emotional arguments MUCH stronger than rational ones. (And also the policies progressives advocate are popular individually, but turn off people when packaged as massive spending -- that's a problem too)

The so-called far-left holds many beliefs which are also widely held by a majority of Americans. The question is how you name that position. "Far-left" is a term of art to make sure Americans don't recognize things they believe.

Oh I’m of the belief that America is a center-left nation more than a center-right one. But they don’t attempt to convince people to their side. If someone disagrees, they belittle and treat others as if they’re stupid. It’s not a winning strategy.
@thorsson_john
@RadioFreeTom
Agree. Perfectly stated. And, the exact thing that will screw up Ds ability to win local and state elections, the foundation on which national democracy is built.
@lodesl
@RadioFreeTom
That’s partially it. We can’t discount the inherent advantages that the right has in our election system. For instance, Idaho has vastly more voting power than California has when you factor in how many EV each state gets.

Having lived and worked in Berkeley for many years, to me far left means communist or radical anarchist, not people who describe themselves as democratic socialists.

There is also the assumption that the media isn't doing its job, which is to frame everything so that the left is the only reasonable position.
@RobertDSullivan
@RadioFreeTom
The media’s job should be to be non biased arbiters. It’s up to the party to do the framing. The issue is that one side of the media tries to be objective, while the entire RW media bubble is actively engaged in telling their viewers a false reality.
