so yeah ive been complaining to my (male) gp and (male) gynaecologist about being so sore and constantly tired for MONTHS and they told me it was normal side effects of my medication and just to have a coffee, and i said no that something is so wrong, and turns out it's leukaemia

it's chronic myeloid leukaemia that im refusing to google, im going to need a tablet every single day for the rest of my life + a bone marrow transplant, but i might even be able to avoid doing chemo so it's not a terrible outcome and the ppl at the hospital are so nice

this came out after ONE SINGLE BLOOD TEST btw, my white blood cells were so obscenely elevated they called it an acute crisis and the cell count would have been high for the past year

The comments have started to get weird so I want to clarify that medical misogyny is so well documented and wide spread. It’s far works for non white women as well. https://t.co/RJZcYg9gZh

@tetraphidopsida Hey just so y'all know, this isn't an issue with male doctors. Just doctors in general. Your experience is not everyone's. There are just as many stories about female doctors as there are male doctors.

@tetraphidopsida I just wanted to say anesthesia resident here, that chronic leukemia is NOT a terminal disease, it is a serious condition but there is medication and the life expectancy can be the same as the general population, patients struggle with this diagnosis but it is not acute leukaemia

@tetraphidopsida I was hoping the end result was “I’m in menopause” not leukemia. I’m so sorry.

@tetraphidopsida Sorry this happened to you, but quick question? Why did you choose male doctors? I have nothing against them, I just feel more comfortable discussing my body and health with women.

@tetraphidopsida doctors need to start taking more responsibility… this is a serious issue and too often do they dismiss patients for being too ‘dramatic’ and misdiagnose them..

@tetraphidopsida Genuine question, do the gp where you live don’t recc blood test if you aren’t feeling well after atleast 2nd/3rd visit ?? Bcz it’s literally the norm where I live

@tetraphidopsida Doctors shrugging off patients because they think they’re dramatic is such a common malpractice and really needs to get their asses sued more often.

@tetraphidopsida This seems to be the norm today. People pay enormous sums for health coverage, but medical care is no anywhere near the best. So sorry. Wishing you the best.

@tetraphidopsida A simple complete blood count test would have raised red flags. It is quick, not expensive. How could they refuse to do that? Fingers crossed the treatments go well & you are stable.

@tetraphidopsida Since getting a misdiagnosis, I have asked my doctors to "put that down in writing" on my sheet. Most of the time, they will come up with some excuse as to why they want to do these tests now that they didn't want to do a moment ago. It's basically a safeguard for situations

@tetraphidopsida I am so sorry. The maltreatment and dismissal of women's symptoms by healthcare is grievously bad. We shouldn't have to be in crisis before we're heard. I hope you will have compassionate, informed care going forward, with providers who attentively LISTEN.

@tetraphidopsida Complained for months about a lump under my arm to my gyne (I was pregnant at the time). Blessing in disguise because had I been diagnosed so early in pregnancy, I may have had to make a decision about ending the pregnancy for chemo. It was lymphoma. Im a nurse so I get a

@tetraphidopsida Medical misogyny is a very real thing. It’s also one of the reasons why autoimmune diseases aren’t as researched, it’s mostly women who have them.

@tetraphidopsida Male ER doctor did an ultrasound on my 3-year-old's arm because "they try not to do x-rays on anyone that young." He said it was just a bump, and it would heal on its own. Cut to the next week where she leaves her dance class early, screaming in pain. We called the pediatrician

@tetraphidopsida Infuriating. I'm in the middle of trying to get an issue sorted right now myself. Uterine was hemorrhaging to the point I bc anemic and could have died & this is now my second year trying to sort this. Health care should not be this hard.
