It is with so much excitement, gratitude, and disbelief that I share I’ve been at Apple for ten years. To the entire Apple Design Team and everyone who took a chance on me when I was only 19 years-old, I owe you the world. Your endless support and belief in me mean everything. ❤️
Happy Pride. I don’t really talk much about my personal life much on the Internet, but this is my boyfriend, Nick, and he’s really great. All I’ve ever wanted is to build a life with someone who’s in love with the same things in life. Everyone deserves the opportunity to do that.
watchOS 10 is the most significant update for Apple Watch since its introduction. In “Meet watchOS 10”, I share an in-depth look at how we designed the new user interface and how you can use the same design principles to make great apps of your own.
We’ve been working hard to make AirPods Pro even better. In iOS 17, Adaptive Audio blends Transparency and Noise Cancellation based on environmental noise, Conversation Awareness detects when you start speaking and lowers media volume, and you can now press once to mute/unmute.
Honored to have helped lead an amazing team of designers who worked on this and to have contributed some UI magic that I hope people both enjoy and that integrates seamlessly with the way people already use notifications.
With watchOS 11, you can now press and hold the Action Button on Apple Watch Ultra to quickly switch actions using your finger or the Digital Crown. Had a lot of fun working on this with
@edchao
.
This is my 14th WWDC since I started this job and each and every year, I am still so excited and grateful to get to wake up and do something I love with people I love each and every day.

I’m so excited to share our WWDC session, “Design for spatial interaction,” where my co-workers and I from the Apple Design Team share how we designed features for iPhone, HomePod mini, and AirTag, and how to design spatial interactions of your own.
It’s extremely hard to convey just how much work so many wildly talented people on the Apple Design Team put into establishing a visual language to convey the power and capability of Apple Intelligence. We hope you can feel it in our work every time you use your iPhone.
13 years at Apple today. I hope have and continue to demonstrate my appreciation for this opportunity in our work each and every day.
While I’m no longer 19, it’s never lost on me how fortunate I am to feel this sense of wonder & excitement about what I wake up and do each day.
We've been working really hard on a new Pride Edition Sport Band, watch face, and iPhone wallpaper. It was an honor to help lead visual and interaction design alongside my team mates—incredible industrial and visual designers—and so many other partners.
We’ve brought Live Activities to Apple Watch and made the Smart Stack even more intelligent in watchOS 11. Join
@edchao
and I for “Design Live Activities for Apple Watch” to learn about the design of Live Activities and bringing yours to watchOS.

Today, I received something I have wanted for a very long time: 1 of 500 tables produced by Herman Miller for the 50th anniversary of the Eames Office modeled after the table Charles & Ray designed for their home. This is 286 of 500. It is mine and it will become my children’s.
Today was the first time in three years that the entire design team was able to be together and celebrate. I teared up multiple times and my face is very puffy. I’m immensely grateful to be here doing the best work of my life alongside some truly incredible and caring people.
I'm starting to feel very emotional about WWDC only being a week away; this will be my 13th as an Apple employee. I've spent my entire adult life in this role and in this community and I can't wait to see some familiar faces.
watchOS 10 is now available! If you're interested in how the Apple Design Team approached its design, I shared a bit about our goals and process at WWDC23 in June.

I turn 29 today. 28 was beyond terrible, but I learned a lot, deepened and forged some really important friendships, bought and made a home in the city I love the most, and designed some things I’m really proud of. Here’s hoping 29 has a little more light in it.
We’ve been working incredibly hard on designing a brand new user interface for Apple Watch and can’t wait to share all about it with you this week.

I am very much on vacation right now, but we have some open roles for HI Designers on the Apple Design Team. If you’re interested, check out this posting and send your portfolio my way.
I know everyone is excited about WWDC, but let me tell you, I am excited that it is Friday and that I am done with work before 10 PM and cooking dinner at home with my boyfriend while drinking Champagne.
I’m 32 today. Despite what little I shared here, I’ve been through some really difficult things in the recent past. For the first time in years, I feel like I’m living and not surviving. I’m so grateful for and proud of the life I’ve created from that darkness. Just keep running.
Annual emotional moment: The design team is incredible. Every day, I wake up and feel like luckiest person in the world to work here with so many immensely talented, passionate, and most importantly kind people. I truly believe the work is good because we care for each other. 🥹
There are SO many amazing sessions this year, but I hope you’ll tune in to “Design for spatial interaction” where I present alongside some of my amazing co-workers on the Apple Design Team and share how we designed spatial interactions for iPhone, HomePod mini, and AirTag.
Wishing everyone a very happy holidays from Charles and I in San Francisco now that we are done with our annual attempt to get him to sit still for a photo.
I say it every year, but I consider it the privilege of a lifetime to do what I love alongside so many incredible people every day. So many designers and engineers worked so hard to bring it all to life. Any excitement about what we make together fills me with so much joy.
Happy AirPods Max week. I hope they bring even a single brief moment of music and joy to your ears and make whatever you’re going through this year a little easier. ❤️
This is my 12th WWDC since joining Apple and while I say it every year, the gratitude I feel for all my colleagues on the Apple Design Team and our many collaborators throughout the company only grows every year. We do our best work by caring for and supporting each other. ❤️
As you may have seen in the live stream, there’s a really lovely new Pride wallpaper we designed that brings the colors of the Pride flag we’ve celebrated on Apple Watch to iPhone for the first time.
@mahalis
is a magician and is always especially fun to collaborate with.
2020 has been one of the worst years of my life. That anyone is remotely excited about some of the stuff my friends and I care about and work really hard on every day means the world. Thanks for helping me feel like a kid again for a few hours. ❤️
Really proud of our entire Human Interface Design team that I am so lucky to be a part of for all the work we collaborated on, debated, iterated on, and created together this year. It’s always so lovely to see such excitement.
San Francisco Marathon ✅. Thanks so much to all my friends and family and the entire Apple Design Team for supporting me and listening as I have talked endlessly about this for the last 6 months. I love you and this place so much and I’m so lucky to have you in my life. ❤️
Join me tomorrow morning for “Meet watchOS 10” where I’ll share an in-depth look at how we designed watchOS 10 and how you can apply watchOS 10 design principles to make great apps for Apple Watch.

Happy National Coming Out Day. I still don’t really like talking about being gay. I’d rather talk about design and technology and food and wine and how to host a perfect dinner party—especially how to handle lighting. I find those things much more interesting. But it’s important.
I couldn’t think of a better way to ring in 30. 28 and 29 were incredibly dark years of my life. This is how I saved and continue to save myself. 🏃🏻🏃🏻🏃🏻
An amazing group of designers across hardware and software on our team put their hearts and souls into designing this new Black Unity Apple Watch band and watch face.
We’re bringing Live Activities to watchOS this year in watchOS 11. I hope you’ll join
@edchao
and I tomorrow where we’ll talk a bit about what’s new in the Smart Stack and how to design your Live Activity for Apple Watch.
So excited everyone is so excited about WWDC and everything we have been working on. Right now, I am extremely excited about being in bed with my dog at 8:30 PM and watching Alison Roman cooking videos. 🫠
For visionOS, don’t miss amazing sessions from Amy, Eugene, Israel, Lorena, Nathan, and Miquel on our team on principles of spatial design, input, and designing spatial user interfaces.
I’ve lived in SF for a decade. It is my home. I love it from the bottom of my heart. I have never once experienced something like what just happened: I was getting into my car and someone I barely saw biked by me and called me a “faggot”. We still have so much hate to dismantle.
Congrats
@cabel
and everyone
@panic
. Making hardware is *so* difficult (and rewarding) and it’s so exciting to be holding this dream of yours finally.
My deepest apologies to all of my co-workers for the mechanical keyboard rabbit hole I have finally fallen into after already being known as the Apple Design Team’s loudest typist™.
I walked into our design studio yesterday for the first time in a very long time and cried really ugly, happy tears for ten minutes. There are so many small, wonderful things in life we all took for granted.
This is my 10th (wow time flies) WWDC since I joined Apple and more than any product we’ve ever made together, the *amazing* people I work with and how we support and care for each other is what I’ve valued the most—especially this year. I hope you can feel it in our work.
I feel seen. 🙈 Very excited as well! So many people across so many teams and disciplines worked so hard to support each other during a very difficult year and bring it to life.
Omg…I remember the exact moment
@taylorcarrigan
came up with the name “SharePlay” (at the time for listening to music together with friends) back in like 2014—and how much we all loved it. Pretty awesome to finally see it out in the world ☺️
We designed the Action Button on Apple Watch Ultra to be configurable, to provide clear confirmation in your peripheral vision, and to be used without looking at the display. The updated HIG details how you can support the Action Button in your Apple Watch apps.
My favorite thing to design is a perfect dinner party. Last night, I was so fortunate to host one to celebrate my 30th birthday next week. I’m so grateful to have so many wonderful people in my life and to have been able to gather once again with the people who matter most to me.
If you’d like to learn more about how we designed the Smart Stack in watchOS 10 and how to make widgets for it, my friend and colleague
@edchao
—one of the most talented interdisciplinary designers I’ve worked with in 12 years at Apple—has a great session.
I’m so grateful to work with such an amazing team of designers who worked together to bring these new Pride bands and our new Apple Watch face to life.
I’m now in the last 2 months of my 20’s. I’m surrounded by healthy, supportive relationships. I work out 7 days a week & am in the best shape of my life. I’ve been at Apple & living in a place I truly love for over 10 years. I’ve learned how to believe, fight, and never give up.
I’m so happy there was so much excitement this week. It makes everything we do every day worth it, especially in this challenging time we’re still in the thick of. I’m out of the studio with my boyfriend for the next week really taking care of myself, maybe for the first time. ❤️
A fun session detail: The Apple IIe, original Macintosh, and yes, the original iPhone were functional and filmed in camera. We felt so strongly that it was important to not only articulate how to use this new method of interaction, but acknowledge the history of input methods.
As always, we owe a huge thank you to the incredible team we work alongside at Apple to film and produce these sessions every year. Thank you for making
@edchao
and I look so good.
My Keychron Q1 finally arrived yesterday and I am very happy with it. I should not spend a significant amount of my weekend doing work, but now I sort of want to.
A counterpoint: I live alone with my puppy Charlie. My neighbors came out and stood at a distance while I washed my car so I wasn’t alone. There are good people in the world who care about supporting each other. I’m definitely going to open some good wine tonight though.
This COVID booster shot is one of the most exciting product launches this week. So thankful for the doctors and scientists working so hard to keep us safe.
This session was such a labor of love for the five of us, who have worked together for many years on so many different products. I am so fortunate to work alongside and to continue learning from so many amazing people each and every day. I hope you’ll check it out.
Happy National Coming Out Day. There’s a lot of vulnerable stuff I could say about my experience being gay. Quite honestly, I’m just happy to be doing something I love and living a quiet and private life full of food, wine, running, and good friends. Everyone should be so lucky.
Smiling ear-to-ear after finally meeting
@EvaGiselle
and
@fusion_drive
after over a decade of Internet friendship. Us 30-something-raised-on-MacThemes-designers have to stick together.
It still blows my mind when I am outside in my incredibly liberal neighborhood in San Francisco and see people without masks. Personally, as a designer/gay guy/someone into menswear, I’ve just turned it into a fun challenge to coordinate masks with my outfit and watch bands. 🤷🏻♂️
I appreciate all the sympathy, but I’m OK. I’m extremely privileged. I cried in a garage I own for 20 minutes about stupid words someone said and some coffee (I think?) they spilled. People are dying. Businesses are closing. Order takeout and be kind. We all need more kindness.
I’m really excited for this week, but like last year, I will deeply miss seeing so many familiar faces and meeting new ones in person at WWDC. I always get emotional on this evening, but more than anything, I’m just so incredibly grateful to work with so many amazing people. ❤️
