If you’ve got a political project that you think is Christian but the general ethos and character traits implied by the Sermon on the Mount are really quite alien to it, it is not a Christian political project. You just think it is.

Some, though not all or even most, of politically conservative Christianity is driven by very similar urges to (some, not all of) politically progressive Christianity: Christianity itself, as in trying to follow Jesus, isn’t enough—

you need something more interesting and aligned with your personal vibe. This is why often both deconstructors and political Christian vitalists were raised Christian. If they had not been raised Christian, they probably would not bother with the Christian part of their identity-

they’d just be either progressives or right-wing pagans according to preference or vibe. The Christianity part cramps both styles to a large degree. Both would work better without it.

@suzania I side with Luther and Calvin on this: the Sermon on the Mount pertains to the Inner Man and the orientation of our heart in every action. It is not a new Civil Law nor the basis thereof

@AS_Protestant Sure. I’m talking about the way that often people engaged in political projects end up treating others in everyday life or in conversation etc. I’m not talking about laws, but character formation.
