this is really the central thing. Those who because of mental illness are considering suicide do not need to be told “yes that might well be a good option for you, no ethical problem with it, you’re not needed here and there’s no objection from our side for you offing yourself.”

@globeandmail I suffered from depression for 3 years, there were times when I thought suicide might be a good idea. Thank goodness no one at those moments offered me MAID.

This is a profound betrayal of human beings. To pretend that there’s something called mental illness that’s isolated from social experience, that is not impacted *by being told it’s a fine choice to kill yourself if you have the desire to,* is itself insane.

That’s just not how humans work. We are social animals: living in a society where we are told that suicide is an Ok option and that we have no duty to others to stay alive, that it is OK if we choose to go AWOL from life, will itself *foster* mental illness & suicidality.

@KaraNSlade This is almost worse than abortion, to me. Imagine saying to someone who is considering suicide “yeah go ahead, I’ll give you a hand, it’s your choice of course but you’re not needed here so…”

@suzania Yep. Had those thoughts plenty of times due to my OCD/Anxiety/Depression. The lies we enable to coddle our broken minds can be... horrendous at times.
