In the same way that functioning markets are meant to react to monopoly power, so are democratic political systems. Failures of the former are market failures; the latter are political failures.

I seem to recall our critics saying that gov investment in the semiconductor industry was doomed industrial policy - I guess they've come around
In recent decades, only a handful of government interventions have been widely regarded as successes. Operation Warp Speed is one of them. So is the CHIPS Act, the $39 billion program that catalyzed a massive investment boom in manufacturing semiconductors on American soil.

That antitrust & competition authorities casually let Amazon buy Abebooks (back in 2008) feels like a bad joke

Bharat R, who really understands this stuff, explains exactly what made the shutdown deal such a defeat snatched from the jaws of victory. I also strongly recommend his new substack:
Eight thoughts on the shutdown deal. The reason why past shutdowns had failed to produce substantive wins is because the party making the ask was getting blamed. That wasn't the case this time--Trump and the GOP were absorbing the blame. That gave Dems leverage. 1/

If you want to see how money and power can corrupt a man's soul, Marc Andressen, here found mocking the pope's call for AI ethics, makes for a good case study.
Why is Marc Andreessen mocking the Pope? The Pope is right. Building AI with moral discernment is an imperative. Not a good look for Andreessen.

SNAP is interesting bc it is pure redistribution from wealthy to poor and feels like a core part of the "third way" deal: massive accumulation of wealth okay but in exchange the hungry get fed. Yet somehow even that is too generous for the GOP

Donald Trump's administration and Republicans in Congress are blaming Democrats for their own antipathy toward SNAP benefits.

When I was in gov everyone was terrified about voter backlash if flights canceled; indeed that was a threat wielded by the airline industry. This Administration, metaphorically, seems willing to fly directly into the storm -
