Social Networking 2.0 Facebook and Twitter represent the v1 of Social Networking; it's a bad copy of the analog world, whereas v2 is something unique to digital, and a lot more promising.

@stratechery @benthompson @benthompson This is spot on. I'd love to share with you what I learned from Ning and have applied to @MightyNetworks which has grown the number of interest-based communities on the platform 2x this year alone. We see it as giving brands & creators a network effect as a service.

@stratechery This is an optimistic view on social networking 2.0. The flip side is child pornography, violent extremists, and other unsavory groups safely ensconced away from the rest of your day job, church-going, family life.

@stratechery Random question @benthompson - why is LINE used for family and WhatsApp for friends? Is this common in Taiwan?

@stratechery Hmm @benthompson this is why we designed Circles for Google+...any thoughts on why that did (or didn't) fit the model you describe here (I certainly posted/consumed different facets with different folks using circles)?

@stratechery Calling FB & Twitter v1 social networking, wipes out the memory of everything before Web 2.0. For the youngins, in the beginning there were BBS's, then IRC, then , then Myspace & LiveJournal and Friendster, then FB & Twitter.

@stratechery @benthompson @benthompson great piece! This seems like a golden opportunity for Substack/Medium to expand beyond article hosting into community-hosting for the subscribers and authors together. Think it’ll happen?

@stratechery Video media got better when it was no longer free (indirectly paid by ads). Music from a curator/broadcaster got better when it was no longer paid indirectly by ads. Social media will get better when people pay directly for it, not indirectly thru ads. $$ is the feedback path.

@stratechery @benthompson “I am in private groups with plenty of folks that I disagree with about a whole host of things, but because we share a common interest, and are ok being trusted friends on that vector, I have learned a lot about why they believe what they believe about a bunch of issues.” Spot on

@stratechery @benthompson Reminded me of a Twitter training session from about 10 years ago. Your follower numbers have jumped up a little since then...
