Maybe creating a cultures driven by test and testing has driven children away from the sheer joy of Reading. Also the increasing use of excerpts rather than whole books. No money in school budgets to update library stock in schools . Not enough teachers who know about books…
MPs have launched an inquiry into why fewer children are reading for pleasure – and what schools are doing to get pupils into books https://t.co/0AC9d0xLXk

…I could go on. It’s really not rocket science. Increasingly reading in schools has become functional and performative, no joy no excitement, a world of right answers rather than discussion and questions and theories and ideas. A world with no mystery and no room for opinion.

@smithsmm I think it’s actually adults reading that encourages children to read - my mum and dad used to take me to the library and I’d see them reading not sure whether that happens in homes now and then are multiple tv channels and phones 📱 so much to distract people.

@smithsmm @MichaelRosenYes When Public libraries were reclassified into learning hubs, books became a secondary concern. Most modern libraries barely have any books. This is why my family stopped using them. Schools rely too much on technology.

@smithsmm We squeezed joy out of reading by turning it into data collection. Give kids full books, time, and teachers who actually love literature, the change is immediate.
