Kansas badly needed to hire an innovative, imaginative coach to rescue the program. Instead, it chose Les Miles. My column on the faulty logic in its decision.

Note: I hope you appreciate the elaborate coffee-chain metaphor I came up with for this one.

@slmandel Not that I’ve come around on Les being the answer as a long term guy, but what if he’s never meant to be? What if he’s a 1.0 hire meant to bring stability and infrastructure and go somewhere between 5-7 and 7-5?

@slmandel I can’t read this because nobody would pay for an article about Kansas football but my guess is, it says: Miles is not the right choice...blah blah blah, I write for a sports site so he will not be a good fit because I said somethings that may or may not turn out to be true.

@slmandel He wasn't hired as a long term solution. Simply an above avg coach to take the program from bottom dweller to bowl eligible. Then in 3-5 yrs they hope to have gotten good enough to draw attention of a good long term solution coach.

@slmandel He believes in discipline football .. defense and speacial teams .. seems innovative compared to the 7 on 7 mindset of the rest of the big 12

@slmandel How about just accepting the fact he is a fantastic coach. 142-55, .721 Win% at major schools lsu and Oklahoma state.. He will actually do things much different than everyone else in big 12 .. it's called defense and special teams. Not flag football 7 on 7 like everyone else

@slmandel It's safe and secure. Sometimes ADs have to take less risk in hiring so as not to go down with the ship, especially in football.

@slmandel I wouldn’t bet my life you’re wrong but I think you are giving no weight to what Les Miles did at OSU with Grundy as his OC. If I was Kansas that’s what would prompt that hire, not his time at LSU.

@slmandel Terrible take. You are incredibly uninformed on Kansas football. This isn’t 2009!

@slmandel Guy was fired from an SEC team after compiling a 114-34 record. The SEC holds teams to different standards and it’s an incredible challenge to win. He did that. Poo pooing on this hire is premature IMO. KU needs a name who can drive recruiting and donor funds. Miles is that.

@slmandel Proven winner for a fanbase with limited history of winning in recent years. Who else you think would take that job? RichRod? Heston after he’s done with USC?

@slmandel Kansas' best chance of competing is a run attack. And really? If Kansas hires Greg Schiano you'll blather about that and if it's some coordinator you guys will say it's a risky hire.
