Campaigning for survival of West Cavan from unregulated afforestation. A neighbour is always better than a tree.

Will @cavancoco be seeking contributions from @coilltenews for this repair? This bridge wasn’t built for large forestry vehicles crossing. Maybe time to put weight restrictions or usage limitations on all bridges 🤔.

Nothing new here for us. Unfortunately forestry, disaster, devastation, isolation, acidification, carbon emissions, environmental damage, species loss, community decline are all in the one paragraph 😢☹️.
Its positive to see Marie Donnelly CCAC highlighting the need to safeguard deep peat but we also need to protect shallow peat from inappropriate afforestation. Little action is being taken to restore afforested bogs, which are a significant source of GHGs.

What a beautiful thread, how it captures the essence of place names & the pictures the reveal. One of the saddest things about Ireland’s afforestation policy is the loss of the field & place names 👇.
🧵1/.In Ireland, we used to see the land as a body. A living, breathing form. Every hill, every curve, every place—part of us. But colonisation didn’t just take the land. It took the meaning. It took the names. Let me show you what we’ve lost👇

What do our friends in @EU_Commission think of this lack of consultation & indeed what do @EU_ENV think of the abuse of Aarhus?.
There is no criteria or assessment of community concerns in the afforestation licensing process by the Forest Service @agriculture_ie minister @MHealyRae ignores such concerns in favour of forestry owners, timber industry lobby & profits/ returns? .

It’s no wonder when the paper of record links a photo of conifer forestry with any story regarding carbon emissions. Irish forestry is a carbon emitter 🤔.
The latest indications on Ireland’s carbon emissions “are alarming and shocking”, the Stop Climate Chaos coalition says. SCC public policy adviser Oisín Coghlan said Ireland was going backwards on the path to a pollution-free future.

This lady & may see the value in the west. They & we don’t believe in the planting with Sitka forestry to the detriment of others. We value people, family, environment & community. Join us & others @SaveLeitrim @SaveKerry.

What plans have @cavancoco & @agriculture_ie drawn up for west Cavan given that lots of families are potentially at risk from fire due to poor afforestation policies?.
Fire services continue to tackle a massive fire in West Roscommon which has already devastated large tracts of forestry and led to the evacuation of homes. Read our latest coverage at the link below:.

It’s even worse. Ireland’s forestry industry has nothing to do with trees, and hasn’t for years. It’s all about tax breaks & premiums for investors & pension funds. The trees are only a byproduct. Everyone else looses.
It is now clear that Irelands plantation 🌲 plan has nothing to do with climate change or GHG Green mitigation but is all about enriching investors, profits & return on investment to the timber industry & vested interests. Looked after by @MHealyRae

Let’s be clear. When there are profits the are tax free. When there are losses the industry expects a Govt. bailout. More of privatising the profits & nationalising the losses 😂.
Hard to know why Government @agriculture_ie @MHealyRae is going to bail out 🌲 investors after storm damage with yet more taxpayers money when their own forest manual requires owners to hold insurance fore such named events? Industry lobby? State aid?? Moral hazard??

Many apart from the industry itself have questioned the model but have been dismissed. It now seems the industry didn’t know that conifers grow to 30m & have short roots. Leaving them vulnerable to windblow & power line damage. Who knew?.
24,000 ha of forest damaged by #StormÈowyn. Twice the annual cut… Serious questions need answering abt the forestry model but also w/in context of more extreme weather events, changing climate and the need for value for money for the taxpayer that is paying.
