I am very proud of this piece I wrote with Ted Shepherd for the launch of @PNASNexus, in which we reflect, for climate-change science, on the insights provided by E.F. Schumacher in his celebrated book Small is Beautiful (1973). 1/n https://t.co/I6C3wcRpBH

Climate change will affect all of us! Two weeks ago it was my turn. Record-breaking rainfall in Florianópolis, where I live, reached 390 mm in 36 hours. A similar event in 1995, considered the worst extreme in history, was 165 mm in 36 hours. We have released a statement 👇

🌡️🌊The @WCRP_CLIVAR Marine Heatwave Research Focus group, chaired by Antonietta Capotondi and me, just published @CommsEarth this review paper. Many open questions still remain, mainly about their vertical structure, prediction and projections… https://t.co/YDKR3tkQ6J

So it begins… I am here with the Brazilian science delegation to the running up to COP30. I hope we can do differently in Brazil, with science and people at the centre of COP30…

In my state, 70% of the population voted for a right-wing government that denies climate change. Make no mistake, climate change, Amazon and Pantanal deforestation will affect everyone!

Severe fires in Pantanal have already happened in 2020. See below: https://t.co/uhGh4nH0rl

The Pantanal is currently on fire in Brazil and yet this doesn’t make the headlines. I don’t mean to say it is more or less important than current fires on the US west coast or the Australian fires last year, but this might be an consequence of climate change. A thread 1/n

It is shocking to have severe fires in a wetland. This week, the smoke from fires in the Amazon and Pantanal (1S-16S) was brought to my home town in southern Brazil (27S) by a lower-level atmospheric jet (aerosol, left). We could barely see the sun (right).

A few weeks ago, we released an attribution study about the fires in Pantanal @WWAttribution, the largest wetlands in the world. In the last decades, rainfall has decreased while temperatures have risen (left), fueling fires (right).🧵 ✍️ https://t.co/P6OsG1m9bq

Climate experts were increasingly saying that keeping heating below 1.5C is near impossible, yet it remains the global goal. So I asked hundreds of top IPCC scientists what they thought. What they said shocked even me… 🧵 1/n #ClimateCrisis
