Prem is competitive? 1) City on course to be first team to win 4 top flight titles in a row 2) 26 of last 28 titles won by just 4 teams 3) Only Newcastle, Leicester, Everton ever finished in Top 4, outside ‘Top 6’ in last 20 seasons. Bollocks it’s competitive.

PSR is a good thing, in my opinion. It means the Prem remains competitive. Why politicians get involved is beyond me. If the club is in their constituency and affects their community then fair enough. But aren’t they busy enough? What next? Rishi Sunak complaining about VAR?

@belatopzeule I’ve done that analysis already: Previous 35 years before Prem: League: 13 different winners FA Cup: 15 19 different clubs won either league or cup (10 in last 30). A 90% difference. Add League Cup in: 1963-92: 29 diff trophy winners. 1993-2023: 15 diff trophy winners

@robbietaylor_86 So 9 clubs out if 20 have qualified for CL at one point? 45% have competed at the top table. Not bad that. How many have really tried ? Like genuinely said “ we’re aiming for top 4 and have a multi year plan to do so”?

@MarkHeytch Out of the 80 Champions League places available since 2004, 77 of those places have gone to the same 6 teams on repeat. Less than 4% have gone to teams outside “Top 6”.

@robbietaylor_86 More teams have won the PL in the last ten complete seasons than in any decade since the 1970s (when it was the same number). Worth reading the facts:

@GaryJamesWriter We can all cherry pick numbers. How about 77/80 Champions League places in last 20 seasons going to same 6 sides on repeat?

@robbietaylor_86 First 30 years of prem - 6 different winners. Last 30 years of old division 1 - 8 different winners. Ever since the minimum wage was removed, it’s been (largely) same teams on top.

@RobFinney_Dream Plenty other metrics you can use to show league is becoming less competitive. Number of points needed to stay up is now 34, used to be 39 No of pts needed to win league has been 90 in recent seasons. No of goals scored by top team has increased to average 94, was 80 in mid 80s

@robbietaylor_86 Since CL began 15 different teams from Germany, 13 from Spain, 11 from France, 10 from England & Italy have ever qualified. No-one else has more than 7. Poor old Scotland only have 2. Not sure what this proves, but there you go.

@simonmc68 Proves you got more of a chance in those countries. Particularly as Germany, Italy and Spain only had 2/3 qualifiers vs England’s 4…and they’ve still had more different teams qualify

@Kelly40Stevie Having a competitive Top 6 doesn’t make it a competitive league. And just cos other leagues are uncompetitive in terms of league titles we should ignore what’s going on here? It’s all a mess.

@robbietaylor_86 And now Newcastle have been told to sell big players in order to improve their squad. The only clubs able to buy them players are ones protected under FFP / PSR

This is the Premier League over time. The top 6-7 teams are getting stronger, and everybody else is getting weaker. Each dot shows a season, ordered left to right chronologically within a league position band.

@robbietaylor_86 1) without PSR its City every year guaranteed. 2) And do that from 92, you'd only be adding two other title winners (1 from the sly 6). 3) before then it was Villa, Leeds, Forest and Norwich. So it wasn't competitive before either. What is the answer here?

@robbietaylor_86 Competitive amongst top 6 only. Leicester was a fluke and then went down. Leicester City agreed to pay the Football League £3.1m to settle the league's long-running claim that the club breached financial fair play rules when they made a £21m loss. Competitive my arse.

@robbietaylor_86 It’s lost on imbeciles like John Cross because he takes the premier league 💰 so sings to their hymn sheet. Gone are the days when a journalist could speak freely and hold those to task.
