FOUND: What is related to an elephant but the size of a mouse, has hindlimbs built like a gazelle, & was lost to science since 1968? The Somali Sengi, an adorable elephant-shrew was recently rediscovered in Djibouti. @DukeLemurCenter

@Global_Wildlife @DukeLemurCenter Of course, 1968 was a horrible year, but 2020 isn't an ideal year to come out of hiding.

@Global_Wildlife @DukeLemurCenter I remember these from when I was a kid in the 1960s! Too long ago to remember from where--maybe pics from books?

@Global_Wildlife @DukeLemurCenter This animal has been existing in somali inhabited areas for a long time. Somalis called it walo sandheer. It looks like the world never looked for it because every somali speaking individual knows it.
