I'm thrilled to be moderating a panel at the Boston Book Festival this Saturday, 3:30 pm. We'll discuss "Idea City," a great collection of essays on making Boston more equitable, beautiful and resilient. Come see us at the Boston Architectural College, 951 Boylston Street.

Thrilled to be part of this essential discussion about coastal resilience on Thursday eve. Dorchester is so often ignored when we talk about Boston's waterfront, but so much is happening on these shores. RSVP for this stellar panel here!

The abrupt time change jars us out of our routines and into noticing. We’re suddenly aware of the Earth tilting on its axis, of birdsong at breakfast, of the snowdrops and Lenten roses pushing their way through last year’s mulch, @reneeloth. https://t.co/aTyXapCIZP

I love the unexpected arrival of golden spring evenings, the vaguely pagan sense of being reborn with the light, even the quirky ritual of resetting my watch, writes Renee Loth.

Now the're coming for our libraries. In communities from Idaho to Michigan, libraries are threatened by a toxic mix of right-wing grievances. Don't think it can't happen here. My column in @globeopinion:

“It’s a new dawn, it’s a new day.” I don’t know how many viewers stuck around for It, but closing Mayor Wu’s state of the city address with Nina Simone’s song tonight was genius.

correction: It is of course $70 billion, not million. The columnist regrets the error.

The GOP vote to strip the IRS of $70 million is a cynical, hypocritical (remember the deficit?) gift to their rich friends. No one really likes paying taxes, but it's what we do as part of the social compact. My column in today's @globeopinion:

Republicans are shrugging off laws that target tax cheats. You could almost conclude that they don’t have a problem with aggressive policing until it’s their rich friends who are in the crosshairs —...

Are the climate protesters throwing soup or mashed potatoes at beloved (tho protected) works of art misguided? Let me count the ways. https://t.co/0I4e151MN8 Edit

Hark! It's the season for song. My Boston Globe column this week celebrates the joy of communal singing, with thoughts from the great choral director Nick Page:

Some say Boston's #lab boom waning, but the frenzy of life science construction is still aggravating the housing crisis. Should biotech developers contribute more to house the workers they employ? My column in today's Globe:

The Boston Common is the nation's oldest public park, meant to be enjoyed by all. A new master plan raises the question: Can the myriad competing users of the park learn to share? @BostonCommonMP My column in the Boston Globe:
bostonglobe.com
Boston Common is both a tangible 50-acre park and a metaphor: “common” in the sense of jointly shared and “common” in the sense of ordinary, or nonexclusive.

Newspapers nationwide are dropping endorsements, for fear they can alienate readers. But I ran an editorial page for 9 years and can attest to their civic importance. I wrote this for WBUR's Cognoscenti: https://t.co/iU5FZMbAkQ

Yes, it's risky for newspapers to take a stand, writes Renee Loth. But newspapers must be more than traffic cops, waving around opinions regardless of their relevance or truth.

Shying away from taking a stand on crucial issues of the day is an abdication of a paper’s civic duty, writes @reneeloth. https://t.co/zZeV3JrRQ2

Independent women voters are key in the midterms, so the GOP hopes to skirt #Roevember by changing the subject. A look inside one conservative group's abortion strategy in my Globe column today.
bostonglobe.com
In an appeal to independent women voters, a conservative group claims there are “bigger deal’' issues that women should care about more than losing their constitutional right to bodily autonomy.

The MA state #GOP doesn't have much in the way of candidates this November. What it does have are the ballot questions, which it hopes to exploit to boost turnout. My column the Boston Globe:

Much of the energy — and the money — that might otherwise have gone to candidates is gravitating to statewide referendums instead
