It mustn't surprise us if the US just gave an ambiguous signal which could be misconstrued as an assent to the Chinese to start a small skirmish that is a military set back to India just before the elections to dent PM's strongman image?

Who controls any such event to be ‘small’ skirmish? The threat of escalation always exists and Wars are messy, once started run their own course! Even an elongated one! Even the end state cannot be guaranteed!
