Utterly baffled by the online obsession with NHS diversity officers. My employer has 12000 employees. Any big organisation has a responsibility to ensure a safe and happy working environment. I've never met our E&D officer and I'm not even sure we have a designated individual.

The truth is that every manager and director does half an hour of E&D training every couple of years and bears responsibility for ensuring a safe and supportive working culture. It improves employee recruitment and retention. The NHS is a highly diverse organisation already.

The notion that there are hordes of these people roaming the wards like Soviet commissars is completely wrong, and verging on the deranged. I'd be fascinated to understand where this nonsense originates.

@peteneville65 Those jobs have always been there in some form. Within what were called Personnel Departments, Complaints, Compliance, Human Resources. Possibly also through Industrial Relations activities.

@WilliamAled Indeed. But the notion that they somehow bear responsibility for the problems of the NHS are difficult to process.

@peteneville65 Maybe I can update you sometime about the need for EDI officer and the degree of discrimination that does exist in NHS. It’s baffling if you are not of a certain skin colour but well appreciated if you are. We do have a E&D officer as part of HR - and thank god we do.

@Raja19 You completely misunderstand me Raja mate. Of course we need good E&D practice. Any big organisation needs it. It is the widely expressed notion (see the comments on my thread) that diversity officer funding is in some way responsible for the NHS problems that I'm baffled by.

@peteneville65 You might not have met them but I strongly suspect it’s a specific part of one Director’s remit. Most pension funds expect as part of the ESG diligence to be able to ensure someone has that responsibility. If they don’t make a song and dance about it, it’s probably working

@likesretirement I'm sure that is correct. There will be a responsibility chain down from the exec. My point was that we are not submerged with diversity officers as some seem to think.

@peteneville65 I don’t believe it is the NHS initiating this. It is the regulator @CQCProf driving this change as part of their new inspection process and strategy; deriving from the Human Rights Act and The Equality Act

@mitchmil @CQCProf As an HR bod pointed out earlier, the law requires any company to have an E&D policy. If your E&D policy is weak, you may end up with institutionalised racism and spending millions on tribunal compensation. The Met know this now.

@peteneville65 NHS Diversity Officers~They are the stuff of wet dreams for those who flourish by creating division in society. Instead of blaming 'forriners' or 'illegals' for NHS problems, they go for those who are there to help. But they should be looking in the mirror. #NHSCrisis .

@peteneville65 It's close to impossible to staff something like a hospital without making it a non-toxic environment. Most of the people who do the actual work (especially porters and nurses) belong to at least one class that is a victim of historical prejudice.

@peteneville65 Just another typical fairytale from Daily Mail playbook of complete bollocks. If it's about equality and diversity, it must be woke, snowflake nonsense from us, tofu, munching guardian readers.Same guys will tell you there's no racism or bigotry in the workplace or the press.

@peteneville65 The right wing press need scapegoats to try and pin blame onto for the current crisis to deflect from the government. The favourites are EDI leads, all other managers, GPs. Writing about these groups is a 'dogwhistle' to get lots of people wound up

@peteneville65 There has been much in the press about this and the 25% the NHS spends on admin when we have a totally inadequate number of employees at the coalface so it seems. Yesterday's Guardian:

@peteneville65 It’s just another finger pointing, right wing howling tantrum. It’s utterly pathetic but they’ll try anything to discredit the NHS & all the right wing shills & *journalists* jump on the bandwagon. #ToriesUnfitToGovern #GeneralElectionNow
