The crack was anticipated, but the scale of the resulting potential rockfall was larger than anticipated. The contractor is implementing an emergency closure of W Burnside in both directions while the rock mass is removed.

Traffic Alert: There is a very large rock mass at the Tichner / Burnside rockfall mitigation project that has cracked during scaling operations and is potentially posing a risk to the traveling public on W Burnside.

SW Tichner Drive, between West Burnside and SW Kingston, remains closed to vehicle traffic due to continued risk of additional debris falling on the roadway. Pedestrians can use the north sidewalk on SW Tichner Drive. People biking may also walk their bikes on the sidewalk.

Specialized crews rappel down from the top and place a deflated rubberized air bag or air pillow between rock joints they are trying to break loose. Compressed air inflates the bags, and the force dislodges more difficult or larger sections of rock.
