“Exploring real-life experiences of public sexual harassment helped the students to understand what PSH is and the impact it has on young people.” The @ourschoolsnow_ team ran a workshop at the @NewCollSwindon. Here’s some of the feedback we received ⤵️ #teachPSH #endPSH

Lastly, once again we are reminded of why comprehensive relationship and sex education is a necessity for our young people. So they have spaces they can be educated on consent and the legalities of harassment and healthy relationships. 6/

It speaks to a culture in which young male victims perhaps feel too embarrassed and awkward to share when something upsetting and scary has happened to them. It speaks to a culture in which boys are deemed stoic, sexual creatures who don’t speak about their emotions. 6/

Male victims make up 91% of reported cases. This speaks to a culture in which adolescent boys can have their vulnerabilities around sexual relationships used to inflict shame and trauma. 5/

The use of ‘rather than’ suggests sextortion is atypical compared to other examples of PSH but we understand PSH to always have a victim/perpetrator dynamic and when these examples of PSH evolve they can move towards coercive control/unhealthy relationships/abuse etc. 4/

We want to make it clear, any examples of sexual harassment are always rooted in power and control, as opposed to sexual desire/gratification.

NCA specifically state this is an act motivated by money ‘rather than sexual gratification’, as if the demanding of nudes in any other context is for sexual reasons. 2/5

The NCA issued a warning for educators today to bring awareness for victims of ‘sextortion’. We always welcome any magnification of the damage harassment based actions cause but we want to draw attention to just a few things here. A short thread. 🧵1/4 https://t.co/yM7h1KZFfY

This is why our work is so vital. This article is particularly interesting as it deals with the intersection of bullying, sexual harassment, assault and gender. Read it with care 🫶 https://t.co/S8RbsqZnoN

So lovely to finally meet @DrProudman after all these years! We know the law won’t fix inequality, but it sets a precedent. And we will continue to fight in schools, in services and on the streets to make equality a reality for all genders.
Amazing event celebrating making public sexual harassment a specific criminal offence with @PlanUK @OurStreetsNow @jessjleigh. It’s been one the greatest honours of my career to have worked with passionate girls and women to change the law. Several years later and we did it!
