In 2019, the developer got rid of the Tara St Squirrel. After five years, they finally replaced it - with a corporate NFL mural. #urbandesign #visualculture #dublin

Gloomy, but alas all too apt, thoughts from Samuel Johnson (b otd 1709): “He who makes a beast of himself gets rid of the pain of being a man.” “I hate mankind, for I think myself one of the best of them, and I know how bad I am.” “Patriotism is the last refuge of a scoundrel.”

Lovely to get to hear @IrishBaroque play Handel's Alexander's Feast again - and on @BBCRadio3 from the @bbcproms, wonderful - but can't help feeling perplexed that music originally sung in 1742 Dublin by Susannah Cibber is now on a countertenor's lips. Sounds like erasure?

Interesting pivot to see them insert the Hippolyte et Aricie/Phèdre narrative as a subplot in #HostageNetflix - don't underestimate the power of baroque theatre.....

Confidence in the Gardaí among the migrant community is on the floor at the moment. This has been going on for years and it has intensified to at least one attack every day now. Silence from the Minister for Justice Jim O'Callaghan and silence from the government.

Terrible news about the @NYCNI_ (formerly Ulster Youth Choir), closing after only 26 years due to mimimal arts funding in Northern Ireland. A hopeless situation, with young people the main losers.

Yes. Writing is not a second thing that happens after thinking. The act of writing is an act of thinking. Writing *is* thinking. Students, academics, and anyone else who outsources their writing to LLMs will find their screens full of words and their minds emptied of thought.

Israeli settlers set fire to a Church that stood for 15 centuries, along with a Byzantine Christian cemetery in Taybeh, Palestine — a village where Christians have lived since the time of Jesus. Israel is destroying Palestinian Christian heritage. Not a peep from Western media.

I am quite shocked by the fact that here on the (musical) TwiXer, there were 4 of us to remember the centenary of #CathyBerberian, today. Various (male) conductors, for example, are remembered every minute, doesn't matter the reason. 🤷‍♀️
