The Imperial Crown of the Holy Roman Emperor was probably made in Germany in the 2nd half of the 10th century. Most Kings of the Romans were crowned with it until the end of the Holy Roman Empire in 1806. This remarkable artefact is housed in the Treasury at the Hofburg, Vienna.

As I watched this evening’s pastel sunset, I wondered if Anne Boleyn had managed to catch a glimpse of the sun setting over London, one last time. Did she pay particular attention to it, knowing she’d not live to see another? (Image: HRP / Claire Lampon)

Striking portrait of an unknown woman by Alonso Sanchez Coello. Have a close look at her curly hair. So delicately painted! (Museo Nacional del Prado, c. 1570-1573)

While we’re on the topic of Katherine Parr, this is said to be a lock of her hair taken from her coffin when it was rediscovered at Sudeley Castle in the 1780s. I’ve posted more about the rediscovery on my IG story. (Photo by Alex David-Baldi on Flickr, Creative Commons License)

What a wonderful map of Ireland/Hibernia from 1567! It was made by John Goghe with additions by Sir William Cecil. I love the ships and sea monsters! (TNA, MPF 1/68)

On this day in 1533, Henry VIII married Anne Boleyn at the Palace of Whitehall. While nothing remains of the Tudor palace above ground, underneath the Ministry of Defence Main Building is an extraordinary Tudor survivor – Henry VIII’s wine cellar. (POA(Phot) Amanda Reynolds/MOD)

This is a stunning portrait of a young lady aged 21, possibly the Swedish-born Helena Snakenborg, later Marchioness of Northampton. There's so much to look at, including the costly pendant, which may be associated with the Parr family crest of a maiden's head.

This incredible portrait just stopped me in my tracks! It was painted in c. 1620 by the Dutch painter Paulus Moreelse. The unknown woman’s exceptionally sumptuous dress suggests that she was part of the court of the House of Orange-Nassau. (Art Institute Chicago)

Stunning 16th-century embroidered bookbinding! While it has been restored, nothing has been added which was not originally part of the design. The book is in 3 vols, and is a copy of the Historia Ecclesiastica, written by John Christopherson & printed at Louvain in 1569.
