A coach once gave me a piece of advice that completely changed my perspective about 1v1 defending back then. Had gone to play today and remember it all of a sudden so I'd thought I'd share that here. He was a field hockey coach but the same can be applied to football. 1/3
He said that the idea isn't to tackle/win every ball, you lose half of your duels if you think that way, the idea is to make the opponent think that you might steal/win every ball
....and how you achieve that is down to you. Body positioning, delaying, angle manipulation etc etc
@nueverole
It's all about staying in the battle. Don't commit, but don't give them enough space to knock it past you. Keeping your feet moving is sooo important but so often overlooked. If you're flat footed you've already lost.
@nueverole
How about when you use the same advice but when you are attacking e.g body positioning ~ dummy, delay ~ deceleration and acceleration, angle manipulation?
@nueverole
From a very young age, I loved defending. I was about 14/15 years old when I started playing with peeps over 25….. i don’t even believe I can get beaten in 1v1s… I never joined a football club or got any advice from a coach, I just watched Maldini and vidic
@nueverole
Always makes me think of Maldini, I'm paraphrasing here but, "If i have to make a tackle it means i had already made a mistake with my positioning and reading of the situation"
I always teach our girls the best way to make a clean turnover is by interception or forcing a mistake
