Absolutely. I told my PhD guide “I am not working under you. I am working WITH you. We must have that mutual respect in place.”
I give credit to my PhD guide Prof Ghatak that he was not offended with my comment and today even after 13 yrs of my PhD we share a fantastic bond.

90% thesis read, "did PhD under....." should be "PHD with so and so"... Under/Sir are very big problem of Indian academia. It should be completely banned, at least for SRF and above. Put a poster in lab only JRF and UG can call me sir/ma'am. Play reverse psychology. It will work.

It's understood when a fine PhD work is accomplished.. it's the effort of students and the guide. Guides should not feel insecure and students should be humble to acknowledge and be thankful.
