A new Education Committee report which calls for a root and branch transformation of the way mainstream education caters to children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) in England has been released, stating the need for a SEND workforce plan.

With the right support from the Northern Ireland Executive, these changes can become a reality for all deaf children in Northern Ireland – ensuring that nothing holds them back. Access the full report and summary in British and Irish Sign Language here:

3. Focus on outcomes. We need to know how deaf children are doing. That means tracking progress and making sure deaf children are getting the right support. Deaf children and families’ views about this are vital.

2. Strengthen the Sensory Service. We need a Sensory Service that works for every deaf child, with any level of hearing loss – from early years, those with additional or complex needs, to deaf children who use sign language.

1. Put deaf children at the centre of reform. They must be included in plans to improve support for children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), with better joined-up working between professionals and easier access to specialist support in Northern Ireland.
