In Part II, we take a step back and expand on the concept of carrying capacity to see how it aids in the analysis of an entire platform. We will find that the quantity and heterogeneity of subnetworks greatly influence how vulnerable an incumbent platform is.

An example of where we saw these phenomena play out was Craigslist's popularity among rural states in cities. Because horizontal platforms aren’t a singular, monolithic network, our analysis needs to extend beyond the myopic analysis of an individual subnetwork.

In Part I, we found that the success of vertical marketplaces depends on both market saturation and network saturation (what the market demands versus what the platform can support). Both are mutually exclusive characteristics of a digital marketplace.

We began to answer questions such as:.1. How do incumbent platforms maintain their authority? .2. When does a vertical solution make sense, and what increases its chances of success?.3. What are the principles for unbundling horizontal platforms?.

A couple of weeks ago, we started to explore why and how horizontal platforms become unbundled. The exploration forced us to answer questions as to why eBay's revenue is larger than all vertical competitors combined and how Craigslist has grown nearly 7x since the early 2010s.
