New equipment is benefiting endoscopy patients at Fordcombe Hospital thanks to our @mtwcharity. A CO₂ insufflator and flushing pump will help reduce endoscopy waiting times, particularly for patients on the urgent two-week cancer pathway.

Last month we unveiled a memorial in honour of those who flew over Tunbridge Wells Hospital during wartime. It commemorates First Lieutenant William M. McDermott, an American pilot supporting Allied Forces in the D Day landings who crashed close to the hospital on 10 June 1944.

In recognition of our commitment to the Armed Forces community, we've been awarded the Gold Defence Employer Recognition Scheme Award, which celebrates organisations going above and beyond to support veterans, reservists, cadet force adult volunteers and military families.

Their presentations have led to conversations with other providers about potential changes in practice to improve safety, quality and efficiencies. The team are hoping other services around the country will incorporate these new ways of working to help more cancer patients.

The team saw an opportunity to adapt the pathway navigator concept, a single point of contact for patients through their cancer pathway, making sure patients get the best care, as quickly as possible. They help with improved patient triage & reduce unnecessary hospital visits.

Following a rise in demand our Radiotherapy teams provide over 60,000 treatments a year!. Despite the increase, we’re consistently achieving all 3 national cancer standards. Radiotherapy staff have spoken at major conferences on innovative ideas which have improved performance.

Group discussions with a specialist psychologist also help them voice worries about starting a new school and learn strategies for explaining their condition to new people.

When moving schools they often need to take a more active role in managing their condition, and an annual event helps them adapt. Using play they learn about blood glucose, injecting or using insulin pumps, recognising hypoglycaemia/hyperglycaemia & managing diet.
